Valentine's Mix Tape

By Annie Highfield on February 13, 2013

Valentine’s day: You either love it or hate it, often depending on your relationship status. Many see it as the one day when we can express our love, not only for that significant other, but for all of our loved ones. Others see Valentine’s as a pointless day invented by the card companies to make another dollar. Whatever your opinion, I’ve compiled a mix tape of songs in favor and some against the contested day that is Valentines.

For

The Luckiest - Ben Folds

Fold’s ditches his satirical, quirky alias for his song The Luckiest, a unique ballad about love, companionship, and memory. His artistry comes through as a genuine love sonnet in this moving song. Whether you have an old valentine or a new one, this song is bound to hit home for most.

Wedding Song - Bob Dylan

Genius song writer and poet Bob Dylan does it once again with this simple and honest love song. Dylan’s truthful quality of sound comes through as a confession of love. Altruistic, timeless, and worth five minutes of your day.

All For You - Keith Urban

As someone who tends to stay away from modern country, it’s hard to deny how adorable this song is. Unlike his past albums, Get Closer brings a more personal and intimate touch to Urban’s repertoire as it was inspired by his wife. This heartfelt song can bring a tear or two to the hardest of hearts.

Julia - the Beatles

Though it’s tough to choose just one love song by the Beatles, Julia is definitely at the top of the charts. This simple “song of love” was written by John Lennon for his mother, Julia, who died at the hands of a drunk driver when Lennon was only seventeen. This seemingly simple song is a perfect way to express love to all the special people in your life.

Do You Remember -  Jack Johnson

Last but certainly not least, the king of romancing the general public of women, Jack Johnson. In Johnson’s Do You Remember he sings an easy going melody about how he met his wife and how his love for her is constant. Though just about any Jack Johnson song could put you in a great mood for Valentine’s day, Do You Remember is a little treasure of Johnson’s with a personal twist.

Against

Self Esteem- The Offspring

As a punk band, the Offspring have always had a humorous quality to their music, and Self-Esteem is no exception to this. This song is all about the negativity that often resides in a relationship, especially when you’re the more submissive partner. This song is the perfect validation for single people to stay single.

Boots of Spanish Leather- Bob Dylan

This song displays the inner poet that resides in Bob Dylan. Boots of Spanish Leather takes the melody of Girl from the North Country Fair and flips it on its head.  This song is a series of letters between a man and his love. She, in total disregard for his love, is traveling Spain and continually asks what gift he wants her to send to him. Even in his less catchy, popular songs, Dylan always seems to find the words that no one else can.

Bitches Ain’t Shit – Ben Folds

Inappropriate, I know. But when this song comes on my iPod  it can bring me out of the worst of moods. Originally performed by Dr. Dre, Ben Folds transformed this up-beat, slightly angry, rap into a melancholy song via piano and his own simple vocals. Folds doesn’t attempt to change the lyrics, just to sing them as a gangster who has been played would really be feeling.

Somebody That I Used To Know- Gotye

If you haven’t heard this song by now, you must live under a rock. It is everywhere, but for a good reason. Somebody That I Used To Know is a crazy-inventive song by new indie artist Gotye and hits home for most. It’s all about the uncertainty of love and breaking it off only to have that once special person become someone you used to know.

Single Ladies – Beyonce

I feel like this song explains itself. Beyonce’s Single Ladies should be on every one’s, male or female, break up playlist. It just makes ya feel better.

Regardless of who you spend it with, whether you hate the holiday or are a hopeless romantic,  may this Valentine’s Day bring you some kind of happiness.
