Carrie Bradshaw: The Must Have Accessory for Every Season

By Taylor Saxon on January 24, 2013

Before she had Manolo Blahniks or Cosmopolitan cocktails, before becoming a published author, before Samantha, Miranda, and Charlotte, and before the many love affairs with men and one great love affair with the city of Manhattan, there was a young girl in Castleberry, Connecticut, dreaming about the day she would discover her own voice and a fabulous pair of shoes. Ladies, Carrie Bradshaw is back and younger than ever!

The new television show, “The Carrie Diaries”, takes us back to the 1980′s and gives “Sex and the City” fans a look into the life of Carrie before we knew her. Episode 1 of the prequel aired January 14 on the CW, however, the characters created by Candace Bushnell first made their debut in novel form in 1997 and then again on HBO in 1998. These four very different women were thirty-something, single, successful, sex seeking New Yorkers who were irresistibly loved by ladies in the real world who tuned in to watch each week. Six seasons on TV, two full length films, a book series, countless episode re-runs, and a spinoff series later, the franchise has managed to seduce females aged fifty to fifteen into falling in love with best friends Carrie, Samantha, Miranda, and Charlotte. So, besides the painfully cheesy sexual puns and the obvious stream-of-consciousness summaries which bring each episode and life lesson learned to an end, what keeps new and veteran viewers alike in anticipation for their next date with the girls?

THAT is exactly why viewers come back for more. It is the silly jokes, awkward moments, and the occasionally necessary slap in the face with some obvious truth about life that we need and love about our own girlfriends. Of course everyone has a family, significant other, mentor, etc., to fill certain roles in their story but the unique language and bond among girlfriends serves as motivation to strengthen all other relationships. In life, a great friendship among girls is about as detrimental as a wig is to Nicki Minaj: without it distracting us, we realize just how awful it can be.

The Best Words Ever Spoken by Best Friends

“Better alone than badly accompanied.”

Young and single can sometimes feel like lonely and lonelier until you are reminded by a friend that a worthy person owes it to themself to wait for someone who deserves all they have to offer. Until then, there is no better company to keep than that of your girlfriends.

“Oh my God! Manolo Blahnik Mary Janes!”

Thankfully, the healing that comes from retail therapy with the ladies is something men will never understand. We equally need our time apart from one another while in a relationship and shopping is the perfect time for just that.

“In some cultures, heavy women with moustaches are considered beautiful.”

Bad hair day? This is not the most comforting attempt at trying to lift the spirits of a friend but it sure is comical. When we take life too seriously it is nice to have a friend to remind us to lighten up and have a good laugh.

“Being a mother is hard. I needed a break.”

Having a friend who can relate to the hard time we are having adjusting to a huge life change can lift the weight of guilt and stress off of our shoulders. The act of being honest and vulnerable with a woman who understands the pressure associated with a role which only women can fill will help allow us to move past frustration and begin working through it.

“I’m having hotflashes.”

The male and female anatomies are clearly not the same. Sure men can listen and sympathize with whatever body issues girls might be having but they will never truly understand. Tell your girlfriends, the venting session feels much more cathartic.

Over the years we watched Carrie and the girls transition into strong and confident women despite the struggles each of them encountered. From designer handbags to diaper bags, they were each other’s biggest supporters. It will be interesting to travel back to where it all began in Manhattan and see their fashion, their relationships with men, and their friendship develop. From the old to the new, a best friend is a timeless accessory that never goes out of style.

“The Carrie Diaries” airs every Monday on The CW!
