Healthy Eating Tips in College

By Katie Larson on January 23, 2013

One of the most difficult things to do in college  is developing healthy eating habits . The combination of trying to balance studying, sleeping, and a social life leaves little room for making time to even contemplate eating healthy. Coming from someone who actually did gain the freshman fifteen, I then began to come up with alternative ways to make my eating habits more balanced and healthy. In the list below, I have jotted down numerous tricks and tips to help students live with a healthier eating style.

Fulfilling that Sweet Tooth

I must confess, when I was trying to shed some extra pounds I immediately turned to eliminating my sweets. But, if you are at all like me it’s easier said then done. I heard from a close friend that the best way to fulfill a sweet tooth is to freeze all of your fruit and eat it as a dessert alternative. I must say that this idea of hers was genius. My personal favorite frozen fruit that I eat instead of dessert is a bag of green grapes I keep in my freezer. For some reason, it tastes exactly like a frozen dessert but about 1/4 the calories! So, if you are at all like me I would humbly suggest freezing all of your fruit and munching in it during the day to subside those sweet cravings.

Healthy Food On the Go

The next tip I suggest is making all of your healthy food accessible. For example, at the beginning of the week I sometimes like to cut up all of my fruit and veggies and store them in bags and put it all in the refrigerator. Then, on my way to class I can snag one of the bags I have stored for myself and munch on it. I find that the reason I don’t eat healthy snacks during the week is that I am in such a rush out the door that I grab chips or a quick unhealthy alternative. So if I already pre-cut my healthy food then I can take these on the go!

Butter, Butter, Butter

One of the most fattening ingredients that we cook with on a daily basis is butter! There are plenty of alternatives to butter that give your cooking just as good of a taste or even better. One of my favorite alternatives to cook with is unrefined virgin coconut oil. It has the same consistency as butter and it has plenty more benefits! It’s said to have healthier fatty acids than butter and it also makes your skin and hair healthier!

The Secret to a Smoothie

As a college student, time and money are the real essence of ones meal options. A great alternative to a meal is a healthy smoothie. Smoothies satisfy hunger and can actually provide you with your daily intake of vegetables and fruit. A trick that I know about smoothies that I always incorporate is sneaking in my veggies. I pile spinach in my smoothies to make sure that I am given my daily dose of green. You are probably thinking that is absolutely disgusting, but if you counteract the spinach with fruit or juice in your smoothies you can not even taste your veggies one bit! I also put in a scoop of the Super green Medley mix provided by Oriya Organics. One scoop of this green mix gives me my full veggie intake for the day! One more secret that I like to use incorporate in my smoothies is local honey. Most smaller health foods stores sell local honey that actually builds a person’s immunity to the allergies in the surrounding area. It also ads a hint of sweetness to your concoction!

All of these tricks and tips I have applied to my eating habits and it makes all of the difference in my eating behavior. These tips are practical and can realistically be used in the college setting.
