Oh Christmas. Many people find it to be the happiest time of the year, when the cool air greets us with joyous sounds that seem to elevate to a place far away from our struggles. Like all the songs say the laughter of children is so much sweeter and in the presence of all the awe-inspiring lights how could we not join them. But yet in this very happy and even magical time, there is a dark cloud that looms upon every college student, storm that seeks to kill the child in all of us. Finals. Only these dreadful tests could bring out the scrooge in every single one of us, as we count down the days till we can return home and enjoy the moment. So it is easy to understand why college students would have something to be stressed and angry about, but what about everyone else?

A poll recently conducted by Think Finance found that 45 percent of Americans want to skip Christmas. That is crazy. Almost half of Americans want to skip want is supposed to be the best time of the year, how does that even happen? Well I do not know if you have been paying attention to the news lately, I know that finals thing makes it hard, but it seems like there is a whole lot to be unhappy about. The impending fiscal cliff has divided the nation’s capital even more than normal, the Middle East is become more and more unstable every day, and some are still bitter about the election. But even with all this could be ignored for the sake of a couple weeks, if it were not for one issue that gets people hot under the collar of every year at this time. And that is the simple word, Christmas.

Yes, the word itself that is supposed to at least bring the illusion of peace is causing a war among Americans. This so called, “war on Christmas”, is a product of our ever increasing political correctness. It seems as though we have decided that any mention of Christ is way too offensive to anyone who has decided to abstain from religion or dare I say it Christianity. Come on people let us be honest with ourselves are there really that many people that are so offended by Christmas that we have to start describing our decorations with the word holiday? I think not, in fact I think more people have a problem with the removal of it than with the use of it. So please for the sake of Christmas or Hanukkah or whatever it is that you celebrate this time of year, can we put aside our bickering on at least this one topic and say what everyone has been waiting to say all year? Merry Christmas.
