It's Always About Money

Valentine’s Day is coming up, otherwise known as Singles’ Awareness Day.

Companies have been taking our money since we were children during this time of year.Everyone knows in elementary school, if you didn’t get a valentine, it was a mistake. The whole class would give each other pop-culture themed valentines. We would spend our time in art class making bags to put them in.

By the time we got to middle school, it got more costly. The student council would sell roses and carnations. The choir would sell singing valentines. Granted, we knew a lot more people now, not everyone would get valentines from us. But let’s be real here; everyone gave their little clique carnations. Secret admirers would send their love. There was even the rare joke on someone who wouldn’t normally get a flower.

And then in high school, it was time to step up our game. Boys would bring huge teddy bears and balloons for their girlfriends. And there were still carnations, roses, and singing valentines.

Now in college, not only are lovers expected to spend money, those who don’t have anyone extra special in their lives are expected to pour out their pockets as well. A friend of mine posted this on Facebook, and I couldn’t help but laugh and be repulsed at the same time. As if those of us who don’t have a significant other when love is all around feel bad enough, they have to go and take our money as well? I say nay! I was planning on buying valentines for my best friends, but now plans have changed. I can download and print them for free. Thank you internet, for saving me money.
