Skill Building

Some people are not sure if taking on the role of president for a club is worth it or not—it usually is! What you need to know is that you will definitely learn something from running a club. Some people are worried that they will not actually learn anything or gain any skills, but that is far from the truth.

Being the president of a club is all about skill-building. Leadership certainly is a buzzword nowadays, but running an organization definitely will give you the skills you need as a leader. You will learn how to be organized, how to make a schedule, how to create an agenda, how to lead a meeting, how to market yourself and your organization, how to schmooze and network, how to recruit, and so much more.

You will learn so much it might (and probably will) feel a little bit overwhelming. And you might be afraid to make mistakes (you probably will make a few mistakes!). But making mistakes is all a part of the learning and skill-building process that will only make you a better, stronger worker and leader.

Service Hours

One little known thing that might help make being the president of a club and all the work entailed a little bit more palatable is that you can actually get a little bit of something back. That little something? Service hours!

Sure, maybe service hours do not sound as appealing as getting paid or a salary, but college is all about finding a balance between school, work, and extracurriculars. Your extracurricular activities in college are a huge part of what helps you get ahead and allow you to better land the job of your dreams.

But service hours can really help you out too. Many honor organizations require them in order to graduate from them and if you are in an honors program, you need them in order to graduate with honors as well. You can make yourself eligible for good scholarships and Fellowships by accruing service hours as well. Some schools even have a service requirement in order to graduate from the school!

So all those long hours that you put into running your organization, especially if it’s a service-based club, can be counted towards your service hours for the semester! Just check with your school to make sure these hours will count, as every school is a little bit different on what they accept for service hours.

Resume Credit

Some students are not sure if the responsibility of being the president of a club is worth it because real work experience might look better on their resume than a simple extracurricular. But as anyone who has run a club can tell you, the leadership position of running said club is more than enough.

While a job might give you money in the short run, running an on-campus club in a field related to the career path you want to go down might really help you out more in the long run, depending on what you want to do. The skills, the connections, and even that resume credit might help you out more than you think.

Especially, especially, especially if the club you are the president of is related to your career field, it will definitely be a great resume credit, no fears about that. And for many career fields, it is very hard to get an entry-level position until you have graduated from college because of how competitive it is and the skills you might need. So you might not even be able to get a job like that while you are still in school. But running a club that helps introduce you to that world and give you relevant skills will definitely help set you above the rest of the pack once you graduate and start applying.

In the end, being the president of a club is usually a very rewarding (though often also a very grueling) experience. Get everything you can out of the experience and know-how to live your best life while president of a club.
