An Update on the University of Idaho Sexual Assault Case
About a week ago, the city of Moscow learned of an alleged sexual assault that occurred on the University of Idaho campus. Earlier this week, the Moscow Police Department released a report of what happened on the night in question. According to documents released, the alleged victim repeatedly said “no” multiple times before she was assaulted by Kyree Currington.
Those documents also revealed that the woman called her mother and friends after the assault happened. Around 5 a.m. on December 7, 2018, her mother called the police to report the incident.
Currington and the woman met at Stubblefield’s (the 18 and over bar in Pullman) on the night in question. She said the two communicated through Snapchat that he would be able to stay with her that night in her dorm. She made it clear that she did not want anything to happen beyond that. Currington then met her at her dorm room where the assault occurred. He reportedly began grabbing her and trying to kiss her despite her saying “no” multiple times. She reported that he was “smothering her face with his face, so she could not make a sound.”
Currington then removed both their shorts and put a condom on before assaulting her. The woman said she tried to get him off her, but she was ultimately not strong enough to stop him. The woman’s roommate was in the bottom bunk below her, however, she was listening to music with headphones on once she heard “kissing noises.” The Moscow Police Department retrieved the condom from her room and it has been placed in evidence.
Security cameras confirmed that Currington entered the apartment around 3:35 a.m. and left the main floor of the dorms around 4:15 a.m. Currington told the Moscow Police Department that he didn’t know her and denied ever going into the apartment. After learning of the security footage, Currington retracted his statement and said “he may have seen her” at Stubblefield’s. This is just one of the inconsistencies in Currington’s statements.
Currington posted his $75,000 bail and is reportedly living off-campus and is compliant with all court requests. He is also not allowed on campus without an official with him. His preliminary hearing for this case is set for January 10, 2019, at 10:30 a.m.
This is just one day after students will return to campus, meaning that multiple students will be in attendance. There are many groups being formed on Facebook with the goal in mind of going to the hearing in support of the woman. The University is not affiliated with any groups that are planning on going to the hearing.
