Organizing My Life: The Final Semester
It is that time. The time I must relinquish my grasp on my academic blanket and free my eagerly educated self into the real world. This is my last semester, fingers crossed. I will finally be able to say I’m no longer a “super senior” but a super citizen bound for success in the marketplace, at least that is what I hope for.
It has been quite a hike to get here. Literally. My back has been sore for countless days carrying countless numbers of assignments, books, folders, Scrantons, #2 pencils, food, and whatever else I can’t leave home with that day. Being a commuter has helped me to separate my home life from my work life, but it hasn’t stopped me. My first semester, I carried a normal backpack to class. Each successive year, the bag got fuller, until I needed a new bag, a bigger bag. To hold all of my can’t-live-without makeup, shower supplies, an assortment of colored pens, a buffet of lunch to avoid buying campus food, a jug of water to stay hydrated through the entire day, and only my aching back knows what else.
This semester, I feel I’m at the pinnacle. I can set my knapsack down and face the fresh breeze of goodbye, and hello. It is with this metaphor that I take a literally jump from this mountain. I am plunging head first – without my backpack – into my final semester at George Mason University.
I am choosing to be selective in what I carry with me, because the most important thing is that I let myself be light, be free, and most importantly be happy. This is why instead of carrying that jumbo tote, or that pretty messenger bag, I will carry a 50 GB mini-drive, my phone, one notebook, and my lunch – all in one bag no larger than 1ft x 1ft x 4 in.
As I venture into the unknown, I will take a new path. Dare to follow me on my semester journey?
