Bathroom Drama

By Monique Hall on December 11, 2011

At some point within your college career, you will walk into your suite or apartment bathroom and be met with a vision of horror. The term “horror” here is used loosely, describing some sort of nasty mess, possibly involving hair, bodily fluids, etc. When placed in this situation, there are a couple of things you can do fix this problem:

1.  Unless you made the mess yourself, don’t clean it up.

Let’s say someone made a mess in the bathroom and left without cleaning it up. It wouldn’t be right to clean it for them because they might think they can get away with it constantly. College isn’t a hotel, so nobody should expect to be cleaned up after. Not to mention, if there are bodily fluids involved, you could be exposed to a multitude of pathogens that can make you sick, so for your own health and safety, do not touch it.

2. If it happens frequently enough, alert someone.

In the event that there’s a repeat offender messing up the bathroom and you know who it is, ask them kindly to be more considerate of the other people who share the bathroom and clean up after himself or herself. If you don’t know who’s causing the trouble, you can call a house, hall, or suite meeting. Chances are, somebody else who shares the bathroom is also annoyed with the messes being left. If neither of these approaches work, you might have to take the next step and alert someone of authority, like an RA or Residence Hall Director. If the mess-maker won’t listen to you, chances are, they won’t be able to ignore an authority-figure.

Hopefully, these tips will help you out of a messy bathroom situation with the least amount of conflict or drama possible.
