Internships as a History Major

By Uloop Writer on May 18, 2015

The hardest question a person will ask you is what do you want to be when you grow up. Especially when you are in college and the real world is coming so soon. Especially when you are a history major and have no clue what your spot in the real world is. The most important thing you can do is begin to define exactly what you want to do and this cannot be done until you actually go out and try things. This is why attaining an internship is so invaluable, so that you can see what your options as a history major are.

Unfortunately, however, as you probably know all too well, finding an internship for a history major is not that easy. The business and finance majors have it made plain and simple. As do the engineers. They have a strict path to follow and rarely do they deviate from it and internships are supplied directly to fit their educations.

But a history major has no such luck. A history major could go anywhere from teaching to politics, from law to consulting. Or you could end up in marketing or something completely unrelated to history all together. What is most important is finding what is right for you.

This brings up the next significant problem: how to get an internship as a history major. The best advice I can give is to maintain persistence and an open mind throughout the search process. Persistence because it does not matter if you get rejected from 99 internships as long as you get that one opportunity and an open mind so that you at least entertain every possible internship.

You may be looking for a law internship, but find an interesting teaching gig somewhere else. Do not be afraid to try something different than your original plan. I simply typed education into an internship search engine and applied for anything that I was remotely qualified for.

If all else fails, write. No matter what you are looking to do with your history major, it almost always involves writing. Taking an internship with a local newspaper or blog is never a bad idea and will keep you occupied while you pursue other things. It also adds to your writing portfolio, which is attractive to interested employers.

An internship is a starting point not an end point. It is where you not only decide what you want to do, but also what you never want to do again. As a history major, take this time to experiment and try things out. The worst thing you can do is not do anything at all.
