So it’s that time of year again—the time where everyone starts with the “new year, new me” resolutions. I’m sure you still have some from your list that you haven’t had a chance to cross off, but this year will be different. This year will be the year where you get to accomplish everything you want to better about your life.

Of course there might be those ones that will be harder to achieve, but if you put your mind to it and stay committed, you’ll get there.

Here are some inspirational quotes that may help you stay on track with some common new year’s resolutions.

Weight Loss:

This is a very common one that pops up again and again on everyone’s lists. The reason why a lot of people can’t knock it off their list is because they are looking at it as a one and done thing.

Instead, think of weight loss as a lifestyle, a lifestyle to becoming healthier and something that you will be doing longer than just a few weeks. Here are some quotes to help with your fitness motivation.

1) “Take care of your body. It’s the only place you have to live.” –Jim Rohn.

Your body is your temple, and the only one you are going to get. Take care of it, nourish it and be a better you.

2) “Exercise to stimulate, not to annihilate. The world wasn’t formed in a day, and neither were we. Set small goals and build upon them.” –Lee Haney.

I really like this one because everyone is going to have different strengths when it comes to exercising and setting small goals is definitely the way to go.

For example, me and running don’t go together so well, but when I set small goals, like running a mile without stopping, and then upping it, I could slowly train myself to get better, and even like running (not love, but close enough right?).

It’s also best to find ways to exercise where you don’t feel like it’s a drag. If you love dancing, get out there and dance. If taking kickboxing classes will motivate you and make you feel like a bad ass, take a class. Mix it up so you don’t get bored, and remember that doing something is better than doing nothing.

3) “That moment when you feel like giving up, when it doesn’t seem worth it, that is where change happens. Keep going.” –Pinterest.

There will always be those days where getting up and working out does not seem as fun as laying on the couch all day, but when you get to these points, remember all your hard work and tell yourself it is worth it. You definitely need days to relax, but don’t let laziness be the death of your progress.

Academics:

When it comes to grades, I’m sure we all wish we could magically make all of them A’s. Sometimes when we get in the middle of a quarter/semester, we get really “over” school and start not to care as much. This will be the essential time to remind yourself about what you want.

Whether you want good grades to please your parents, for yourself, to get into a good grad school, or all of the above, you want to remind yourself of the end goal whenever you feel like throwing in the towel would be a much better idea.

1) “Just think about why you started.” –Pinterest.

This may seem like a really simple quote, but it can be easy to get side tracked when Orange is The New Black is on Netflix and seems much more fun than writing your 10 page paper. Whenever I get in a rut of not wanting to study, I look at all the grad schools I really want to get into and convince myself that in order to get there, I’m going to have to put in the work.

2) “Whether you think you can, or you think you can’t, you’re right.” –Henry Ford.

This quote can actually go for a lot of things, but think about this when you are worrying about a class. If you think you are going to fail, you’ll be putting the negative vibes out there–you are mentally telling yourself that you can’t do it, and in turn won’t work as hard.

But if you think you can be successful, you’ll be able to get good grades even in the classes that don’t particularly catch your interest or aren’t in your field of study.

Reading:

It is important to be well read, and reading more is something that a lot of people hope to do. Whether you are a book junkie like me who just wants to read all the books, or hate reading but want to try and get into it, reading more is a great resolution.

1) “Anyone who says they only have one life to live must not know how to read a book.” –Author unknown.

Reading has the ability to transport you to another world, help you connect with others, and give yourself a new perspective on things. If reading really isn’t your thing, try and find authors who give you a new world that you really want to explore.

Saving money:

Now that we are turning into full-fledged adults, we need to start getting better at saving money instead of blowing it right when we get it.

1) “Do not save what is left after spending, spend what is left after saving.” –Warren Buffet.

The best thing to do is put a specific amount of money in your savings whenever you get a paycheck, and try your best not to dip into your savings. If you wish to purchase something, wait until the excess money that doesn’t go into your savings is enough to get what you wish to purchase.

It is always good to have some money set aside for a rainy day.

Overcoming an addiction:

Whether you want to stop drinking, smoking, eating chocolate, stop doing drugs or stop Netflix binging, getting over your addiction will take a lot of time and commitment.

1) “In the middle of difficulty lies opportunity.” –Albert Einstein.

Of course it won’t be easy. Chances are you’ve tried to stop before, but this time is your time to make it happen. No matter how hard it gets, try and focus on your progress and what sweet victory will come with your end goal.

2) “Always bear in mind that your own resolution to success is more important than any other one thing.” –Abraham Lincoln.

If your resolution is to overcome your addiction, you’re already off to a good start. Your end goal is your end goal; don’t let others influence what is the right amount of time to get there. Take your time, stay true to yourself, and surround yourself with people who will help you, not hinder your progress.

Whatever your resolutions will be when the clock strikes midnight, remember to make them reachable, but also know that you are capable of more than you might think. Set your goals and stick to them.

This is your year.
